Mission Statement
To promote best practice in the safe transportation of people with disability, in NSW. Outcomes will be achieved by providing guidance on best practice, current legislation, and specialist expertise in problem solving transport solutions that promote access, participation and social inclusion.

TranSPOT Committee:

The TranSPOT committee (formerly known as the Transport Seating Working Group) initially formed in 1989 and is now affiliated with SPOT on DD.

The committee may be comprised of therapists, vehicle specialists / modifiers, authorised restraint fitters, mobility engineers, equipment suppliers, individual positioning customisers / technicians, and representatives from the Assisted School Travel Program (DEC), the RTA and EnableNSW. Links are maintained with external organisations within and outside NSW, including other states and international contacts.

The committee meets approximately 6 times per year. Resourcing questions sent to the committee are discussed and responses provided. The responses reflect a risk minimisation approach to promote safe seating, positioning and assistive technology solutions in transport. The knowledge and expertise of the group members, current evidence, best practice, relevant legislation, and Australian and International Standards / guidelines, are considered.

There is a regular TranSPOT column that appears in the SPOT newsletter and includes the minutes of each meeting, relevant resource information, and Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs). TranSPOT has revised the Transport Safety Guidelines for People with a Disability (September 2010) which is available from SPOT on DD.

SensorySPOT for SPOT on DD members

Origin of SensorySPOT:
The SensorySPOT committee was formed in mid 2007. It began with an interested group of SPOT on DD members who were occupational therapists to investigate the use of sensory processing approaches with clients with developmental disabilities.

Occupational Therapy Survey and Survey Reports
This original committee designed a survey that was distributed to all occupational therapy members of SPOT on DD in July 2008. The main aim of the survey was to gain a snapshot of occupational therapy practice in this area and to determine the educational needs for this group of therapists. The results of this survey were analysed by the committee and two reports were completed in the beginning of 2010.

Establishment of SensorySPOT Online Discussion Group on HS Net:
This group was established in 2009. This is a group for members to post questions and answers regarding sensory processing issues. This is a useful way to discuss with other therapists questions or difficulties that may arise when working with clients with sensory processing issues. It is also a great way to support therapists and share ideas that can be used in everyday practice.

SensorySPOT committee
The SensorySPOT committee meet monthly for teleconferences.
Topics of the meetings can include:

bullet

Questions about clients who have sensory processing issues and discussion around ideas and strategies to try with clients.

bullet

Planning professional development days for Occupational Therapists, Speech Pathologists and Physiotherapists with an interest in sensory processing.

bullet

Planning articles for the SPOT on DD newsletter.

bullet

Discussions about sensory processing journal articles and critiquing articles.

Currently the SensorySPOT committee is made up of Occupational Therapists; however other disciplines are welcome to join.
